Zenless Zone Zero is a style-forward action game where the whole combat loop — parries, dodge-counters, chain attacks — lives or dies on frame timing. That makes a steady frame rate more important here than in most gacha titles: a stutter during a perfect-dodge window costs you the counter. The catch is that HoYoverse shipped ZZZ without DLSS, FSR or XeSS, so you can't just flip an upscaler on and call it done. Getting smooth performance means understanding what's actually eating your frames and cutting the right settings. Here's the setup.

Real system requirements

ZZZ isn't demanding by modern standards, but the official minimums undersell how much the game leans on your CPU's single-core speed.

  • Minimum: GTX 1060 / equivalent, a modern quad-core, 8 GB RAM, ~10 GB storage.
  • Recommended: GTX 1660 / RTX 2060-class GPU, a fast recent CPU, 16 GB RAM.
  • The real story: At 1080p and 1440p, ZZZ is CPU-bound — your processor's per-core speed sets your ceiling, not your graphics card. Only at 4K does the GPU become the bottleneck. If you're dropping frames in busy fights on a decent GPU, look at your CPU, not your settings first.

One requirement people skip: install it on an SSD, ideally NVMe. ZZZ streams assets constantly as you move through New Eridu and into combat instances, and a hard drive produces exactly the kind of hitching that ruins dodge timing. This is the single biggest fix for stutter.

Best settings for smooth combat

There's no upscaler to save you, so the strategy is: keep the settings that define ZZZ's look, cut the ones that quietly cost frames. Start from Medium and adjust:

  • Resolution / Display Mode: Native res, Fullscreen (not borderless) for the most consistent frame pacing.
  • Frame Rate: Set to 60 (or 120 if your monitor and hardware allow it). ZZZ defaults conservatively — raise this manually or you'll leave frames on the table.
  • VSync: Off if you have G-Sync/FreeSync; otherwise leave it on to stop tearing. Pair with an in-game or driver frame cap.
  • Rendering Quality: Keep at 1.0. This is an internal render-scale — dropping it below 1.0 is the closest thing ZZZ has to upscaling and will soften the whole image, so only touch it as a last resort on weak GPUs.
  • Shadow Quality: Low or Medium. One of the most expensive settings for the least payoff during fast combat.
  • FX Quality: Medium. Higher settings pile on particle cost exactly when the screen is busiest — mid-fight — which is the worst time for a drop.
  • Character Quality / Environment Detail: Medium to High. These carry ZZZ's art style; keep them up if your frames allow.
  • Bloom, Distortion, Mirror Reflections: Off on lower-end systems. Reflections in particular are a heavy, situational cost.
  • Anti-Aliasing: TAA — without it the game shimmers on edges and fine detail.
  • Motion Blur: Personal taste, but Off gives cleaner reads on fast dodges.

The principle: protect Character and Environment quality (the reason ZZZ looks the way it does), and spend your cuts on shadows, FX and reflections, which hurt most during the exact moments your timing matters.

Fixing stutter and frame drops

Because there's no upscaler crutch, ZZZ stutter usually traces to one of these:

  • Move it to an SSD. Repeat offender number one. Traversal and load-in hitching almost always come from a slow drive.
  • Cap your frame rate to something your hardware holds consistently. A rock-solid 60 beats a jittery 60–90; steady pacing is what protects your parry windows.
  • Close background apps. ZZZ wants CPU headroom — browsers, Discord, and launchers competing for cores cause the mid-combat drops people misread as a GPU problem.
  • Update GPU drivers, then reboot. HoYoverse pushes frequent client updates; a stale driver plus a new patch is a classic stutter combo.
  • Disable overlays (Discord, GeForce, Steam) if you get periodic hitches — overlay hooks are a common culprit.
  • Lower FX Quality first if drops only happen in heavy fights. That's the setting that spikes when the screen fills with particles.
  • Give it a moment after loading. Some first-run stutter is shader/asset caching that settles after a minute of play; if it persists past that, it's a settings or drive issue.

Hardware picks

ZZZ runs on modest hardware — the wins come from balance, not brute force:

  • CPU is king at 1080p/1440p. A modern Ryzen 5 or Core i5 with strong single-core speed matters more than a big GPU here. Don't pair a flagship graphics card with an old quad-core and expect smoothness.
  • GPU: Anything from a GTX 1660 / RTX 3050 upward runs 1080p at 60 comfortably. For 4K you'll want an RTX 4060 Ti / RX 7700 XT or better — and at 4K it finally becomes GPU-bound.
  • 16 GB RAM, dual-channel. 8 GB works but leaves no room for anything else running.
  • NVMe SSD. The cheapest real upgrade for this specific game.

The short version

No DLSS, no FSR — so put ZZZ on an SSD, run native resolution with Rendering Quality at 1.0, cut shadows/FX/reflections rather than render scale, and manually raise the frame-rate cap. Keep character and environment quality up so the art still pops. On a balanced modern build that's a locked, clean frame rate — and in a game built around dodge and parry timing, consistency is worth more than any raw FPS number.
