Wargaming just reinvented tank combat as a hero shooter. World of Tanks: HEAT is a brand-new, standalone free-to-play tactical vehicle shooter that went live on May 26, 2026 — and it’s billed as the first genuinely hero-driven tank action game. If the slow, methodical rhythm of classic World of Tanks was never quite your speed, HEAT is the faster, flashier answer.

Best part: there’s nothing to lose by trying it. You can register and start playing for free right now. Here’s what’s actually in it.

What World of Tanks: HEAT actually is

Set in an alternate post-WWII era, HEAT trades the simulation-leaning pace of the original for fast, ability-driven team PvP. It’s built from the ground up on a new proprietary engine Wargaming developed in-house, so this isn’t a reskin — it’s a different game wearing the World of Tanks badge.

Agents, abilities and two-tank rosters

The hook is the Agent system. At launch you pick from eight Agents, each built around one of three battlefield roles — Defender, Assault, or Marksman — and each commanding a lethal two-vehicle roster you swap between mid-match. Powerful active abilities mean positioning and timing matter as much as raw armor, which is exactly what separates HEAT from the tank games that came before it.

Modes and maps

At launch, battles play out across eight varied maps and four PvP modes — Hardpoint, Control, Kill Confirmed and Conquest — so there’s a real spread of objectives rather than a single deathmatch loop. Each mode rewards a different mix of aggression, map control and teamplay.

Plays great on a Windows PC

HEAT is available on PC via the Wargaming Game Center and Steam (plus Steam Deck), with console and cloud options rounding out the lineup — and it supports full cross-platform play and progression. For the RidgeGame crowd, the PC build is the one to grab: keyboard-and-mouse aiming suits the Marksman role especially well, and it’s free to install and try.

How to start playing

Getting in costs nothing: create a free account, grab the client, pick an Agent and queue up. Because it’s free to play, the smart move is simply to try it — a couple of matches will tell you fast whether the hero-shooter spin on tanks clicks for you.
